New Boiler Provider Gets In Hot Water

They are all warm smiles now but John and Audrey Tredgett endured several chilly months when their expensive new boiler kept breaking down.
The installer, power company E.on, was the only one in hot water as far as the couple, from Rochford, Essex, were concerned after they shivered from last Christmas to mid-March with no central heating.

Baxi Oldest Boiler Competition

Heating specialist Baxi are searching for the UK's oldest boilers, as part of a competition.

Baxi have asked people to reveal the age of their boilers, with the owner of the oldest receiving a high-efficiency Baxi Duo-tec Combi 28 HE boiler!

Lee Robinson, Baxi's customer service director, said "Older boilers may convert as little as 60 per cent of the gas they use into useful heat, meaning higher fuel bills and more greenhouse gases."

He also revealed that new condensing boilers are much more efficient and reduce a home's gas bills by almost 40 per cent (£150) a year for the average semi-detached house.

How old is your boiler?? Enter the competition now and win a new Baxi boiler!

Boiler Fault Finding Tips

Boiler Fault Finding Tips and Advice

Our gas boiler fault finding tips could help get your boiler fixed quicker. Be aware though, only qualified CORGI gas engineers are legally allowed to repair or service your boiler!

If you find your gas combi or condensing boiler isn't working then there are a number of things you can check before you call out an engineer.

Take a look at our basic gas boiler tips and advice:

  • Check the pilot light - Is it on? The boiler pilot light can usually be seen through a small window on the front of the boiler.
  • Check that the heating and hot water boiler timer are turned on.
  • Are there any lights on the boiler that shouldn't be there, or should but are turned off?
  • Check the correct switch configuration in your manual and make sure all is as it should be.
  • Make sure there is power to the boiler, and that the fuse in the plug hasn't blown.
  • Check that the gas is turned on.
  • The gas supply woundn't usually turn itself off so it may be a connection issue. If in doubt, contact your gas company to check.
  • Take a look at the pressure in the boiler. Many boilers should sit at around 2 bar, but it can vary between models so check your manual. To sort the pressure, turn the valve tap (that is usually on the same pipe as the pressure guage) a quarter of a revolution, until you see the needle rise. Once it is at the correct pressure close the tap again.
  • Check the boiler thermostat to make sure it's not just turned off.
  • If a gas boiler isn't regularly maintained then it can develop faults, make sure you get regular servicing to increase the boiler's life and to ensure it is safe and isn't leaking carbon monoxide (which can result in death).
